I need a very effective dog trainer pronto. Our Shepherd mix (which we've had for a couple of months) has lately been showing aggression toward my wife, for no obvious reason. We've taken him to the vet and ruled out a lot of possible causes, so it seems to be a psychological cause.

So if anyone can recommend an experienced, results-getting dog trainer, on the order of Cesar Milan or Victoria Stilwell, I really appreciate it!

Old Town School for Dogs on N. St. Asaph Street & Oronoco in Alexandria is the local go-to source. If they don't have someone specifically at their location, they may have names they can refer to you.

I know you don't live in Woodbridge but I've used All About Dogs and they have some excellent trainers there.

We used The Dog School aka Dog Day Afternoon in Leesburg. A co-worker used a lady in WV that takes the dog for 2 weeks or longer if needed, she has a bunch of books out and has a good rep but it was too far for us to go and we would miss our dog.

Lost Poplar K-9 Training 540-937-2450 or 703-431-9597 located in Culpeper, Virginia ?

Amy is wonderful! She works with aggressive dogs as well....she's like the female dog whisperer. She worked with my neighbors rottweiler! She has different types of training and a one or two week doggie bootcamp to really work out the kinks!

Here is what it says on her website about possibly the category your dog would fall in:

Reform School
This training is for dogs with serious behavior problems such as aggression, fear, and severe lack of socialization. Emphasis is placed on training as well as desensitization to the stimuli that causes the unwanted or dangerous behaviors. Residency Only.

Again, I can't recommend her highly enough. She is incredible!

Wish I could remember the dog trainer's name who came and worked with our two dogs. She was great. She suggested the doggie boot camp, but at $3500 a dog (we have two)...it was more than we could afford.

Thank you all. Do any of these people do house calls? Those locations are all quite far from us.

Thanks.

Well, the one in Culpeper - you drop your dog off. I think that for some issues that certain animals have - it just might be better for the trainer to continually tackle it daily for a period of time. Aggression can become a serious issue quickly.
