We went Saturday night and it was packed!! I'm glad someone pointed out that it wasn't the county fair, because if it was, it would've been really small.

Front Royal is having a festival downtown on June 18.

Katyusha, if you really want a big, old-timey County Fair you might especially enjoy the one in Loudoun. The only problem with the Loudoun County Fair is they hold it in August, when it's a little hot to participate in greased pig races and other traditional events like that.

Thanks Caladium! I don't participate in anything, but I just like going to fairs to go on rides and walk around.

By the way, I did notice one thing about the ride operators at Celebrate Fairfax - a lot were in prison at some point. But, I guess, who else is going to do those jobs?

We went on sat afternoon/evening - someone we knew had extra ticks, so decided at the last minute. Got there AFTER the rain, when it was nice and not too hot.

We saw the Bangles concert, walked around, looked at some booths, ate moderately healthily,

It was fun, and pretty crowded. First time we had ever been to it. I am not sure what the kvetching is about.

I went to Celebrate Fairfax a couple of years ago and was upset about the high fee but there were tons of booths and things to look at - I guess it has gone downhill as the OP describes.
Where I come from (NJ) most of the fairs are free so I was suprised they charged money to get in. With two kids it would have been about $50 for us - could have a nice dinner for that.

You can tell that someone's been in prison? I'm not trying to be snarky; I've just never heard someone make an observation about a stranger's criminal background before. Did you strike up conversations with the ride operators, or is there some visual way of knowing that a person's been in prison?

a tattoo (tom wolfe in A Man in Full says there is a distinctive style of amateur jail house tattoo)? Lingo?

given the tendency of certain folks to imitate jailhouse styles (you know how the low haning pants thing started, right?) I am not sure if it would be easy to tell real excons from those affecting the style.

McLean Day and the Vienna Fair were both very well attended this year, despite the incredible heat. I don't know about Herndon's fair, but that just happened recently, too. Maybe we'll drop by Reston's fair, too. Our kids love these things.

I think county fairs are a bigger deal in very rural counties where agriculture is still a significant number of residents' actual bread and butter (and a hobby - in the form of small-scale agriculture/livestock husbandry - for many of the others). I went to high school in a very small town in MO (back in the '90s.. but still, not *too* long ago), and I stood out for *not* belonging to FFA and 4-H (WAY more so than for not being white in a 98% white school - seriously). I think quite a few of my classmates took the county fair pretty seriously.
