well all I got out of my little TH was garden this year was a couple of blueberries (should be more next year) and DW has taken to raising thyme in the kitchen window.

But we have a good friend who lives in OUTSIDE the beltway Annandale who loves growing crops. Other night she gave us about 7 pounds or so of zuccini, and a Chinese hot pepper. Before we left we each took a bite of friend's first fig of the season. We cooked about a third of the zucchini last night.

This makes me *really* miss my former colleague who had/has a huge garden/small farm out in the Upper Marlboro (MD) vicinity. He used to bring me all kinds of goodies (and considered me to be doing him a favor by taking the 'extra' bounty). *sigh* I've decided I'm definitely going to have a vegetable garden in my backyard, once I finally have one. In the meantime, I'll look through seed catalogs and make detailed plans for a yummy future.

You don't really need to go rural to farm. Living in a ground-floor apartment with good sun on one side, we just dug up a small stretch between the a/c compressor and a large arborvitae at the corner of the building and had tomatoes, peppers, and squash all summer long. It was maybe 12-15 square feet and we were still taking stuff to work to get rid of it.

That is seriously cool!! Reminds me of the little Japanese place I ate at in Sarasota, FL.. the owner was growing daikon radishes and other Japanese veggies in a small patch of green space between his parking lot and the one next door. It's something I *really* wish more restaurants would try.
