Hey, I'm new to this forum, but I've been searching through threads and haven't found a similar question asked.

Ok so, it has always been my girlfriend's dream to have a picnic on some scenic hill, like something you'd see in The Sound of Music. She really finds them to be beautiful. I'm going to ask her to be engaged to me, so this is all going to come as a surprise to her. I'm willing to drive, but I'd rather it be something around or in the Fairfax City area. Personally I haven't found anything yet. Anyone know of any place that fits this requirement??

Skyline Drive - with this clear weather, fantastic - you do NOT have to stay at the roadside - park, climb down or climb up. I've never been there but Great Meadows has a good rep, too.

The time-distance is minimal.

This is kind of a neato site - and a LOT of places around for the OP: Visit Places Discovered » Historic Sites, State Parks and Museums » Outdoor (http://www.placesdiscovered.com/category/outdoor/ - broken link)

Id add a whole bunch of wineries in Fauquier and LoudoUn

We've been to chrysalis and Naked mountain, both with picnic areas and views. I think there are a bunch of others.

I love to picnic behind the Filene Center at Wolf Trap. You don't need a ticket since you are not actually entering the park. There are rolling hills, picnic tables and if you walk down the paved path, you can walk along the creek. During the summer you can hear the music if you don't have tickets. (while it stays light later)
