A lot of people are defending this woman.

What do you all think?

I hope no one would intentionally leave their child in the car for 7 hours. You hear these horror stories so often though of parents being sleep deprived and stressed and overworked and just being oblivious. This isn't the first child to die in a car, sadly.

I mean, how many times have I locked my keys in the car? How many times have I forgotten to deadbolt the door and my dog has twisted the knob and escaped? How many times have I put milk in the pantry instead of the fridge?

A sad tragedy, to be sure...but I doubt it was anything more than an accident with horrific consequences.

Well that's an awfully loaded question. Of course no one would purposely leave their 2 year old in the back seat of a car.

I think she should be punished, its awful awful thing that happened. However, the murder charges are a bit much because she obviously didn't do it on purpose. At the same time this wasn't the first time that happened. When she left him in the back seat of the car in January that should've been a wake up call. I wonder why the day care center didn't call about him the last time. Was this a habit of hers? To just forget? That's not my place to say. I just think the murder charges are a bit much. At the same time I'm not saying there shouldn't be SOME charges.

Heck no, I would not leave my 10 year old in the car. I have not heard of the story you are referring to.

How can you be so sure? Let me play devil's advocate for a second. There is absolutely no evidence to believe that this is just an accident. Someone could very easily have purposely placed their child in that car and left them in their to die. It also doesn't help that this was the second time that she did this and the only that prevented the first one from not ending tragically, is the fact that the daycare called. I'm certainly not suggesting that she did this on purpose, but how can you prove that this wasn't the case?

Leaving a two year old is pretty hard to believe. I have a two year old myself and usually my car rides with her in the morning consist of her telling me about the buses going by or the trucks or the trees, etc. etc. It usually is a constant conversation. I know all kids aren't like that, but even when she's not talking, I always look back at her to see what's she doing. It's just one of the those things as a parent that you do. When she's around it's hard not to take your eye off of her. And with that said I guess that's my point of having that title as the question. It's not necessarily meant to be loaded, even though I do see why you would think that, but it's to ask, what could possibly be going on that is so important that you leave your child? I'm just curious if anyone has an answer to that.

I have no idea what to think about this woman.

She either intentionally tried to harm the child or she's hopelessly disorganized, scatterbrained, and clueless and needs some sort of intervention to help her with that. I really am not sure what to think.

If that was the father that did that I guarantee you he'd get zero sympathy, people are more willing to cut the mothers some slack

No words for this.

I read Gene Weingarten's excellent feature on this subject from a couple of years ago--and the takeaway was that it doesn't take a careless, sloppy, or uncaring person to make this horrible mistake. Very frighteningly, a number of respectable, affluent, educated parents have done this. It scares the s--t out of me, as I'm somewhat absent-minded myself. If we have a kid, I'm gonna tie fishing line from my finger to the child seat. Or get some IT nerd to program the car to say "Don't forget Little Carlingtonian in the back seat!" every time I open my door.

Maybe they should rethink that law mandating that the child seat go in the back seat.

As to a punishment: I don't know. I can't think of anything worse than the guilt of having let this happen. I would honestly want to kill myself and would probably do just that.

Playing devil's advocate to your devil's advocate:

Is there evidence that it was done purposefully? Sure, this is the second time it's happened, but that's not evidence that she did it purposefully.

"How can you prove this wasn't the case"...there's no need to prove it wasn't, if there's no evidence indicating it was.
