I just moved to Reston, VA and I am looking for a good weight lifting gym. I'm not really into the chain style gyms that have pools, tennis courts ect. since I do not use them and also cause the membership prices to sky rocket. I would just like a place that has a good set of free weights, dumbbells, bench, incline, squat rack, and maybe a few machines.

Does anyone know of a relatively small, privately owned weight lifting gym near Reston or Herndon? Any additional insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Sorry I can't help you with any place in Reston, but if there's a YMCA, check it out. The one near me is just what you described. Good luck!

Sport & Health is probably the most serious weight lifting gym in Reston. It is fairly large, but not overly crowded usually. If you join, make sure the documentation you receive matches what you are told (and keep it where you can find it later).

The weightlifting area in the YMCA is disappointing. Also, YMCA membership pricing favors families and lower income people.

Fitness First is small and crowded, but has good equipment.

I would try the Olympus gym in Sterling. $10 a month and no monthly commitment. I've never been to that one, but their gyms in Burke and Falls Church (called Planet Fitness) are awesome; lots of free weights and never crowded. Although the online reviews aren't too complementary for the one in Sterling; LOL someone said it is like "lifting in a prison yard". At least if you signup and don't like it you can cancel and not owe anything.

Although lifting in what seems like a prison yard is not what I'm looking for, I would imagine "some" of the characteristics of that gym could be what I'm looking for. Mainly I am looking for something rather small and usually privately owned where I can go in, throw around some free weights and dumbbells, then get out. I don't want to pay a fortune for fancy equipment and pools that I do not use. The fact that I was a collegiate athlete and gyms were always free to use, paying $60-70/month on a gym membership still feels like robbery.

Olympus Gym is an option but it seems like quite a hassle to get out there from where I live right outside of RTC. I have taken a few trips down Elden street through Herndon to get to Sterling and it is not very convenient fighting through stop lights. Plus my belief is that you will use the gym more often the more convenient it is to go! Since I am still new to the area, maybe I need to try going at different times to avoid traffic jammed up at stop lights.

Any other suggestions out there? I appreciate the responses!

Had some bad luck with YMCA. You get in the door and nothing seems to be included with the price. Lot's of things are "a la carte". Swimming lessons for the kids, martial arts, etc. Didn't expect the latter to be free but it wasn't discounted and I am no Joe Millionaire.

Not sure where you're getting that. I'm married with no kids, and we're not low income (though the price is low for everyone, compared with the chains). As to the weights: If you're trying to be Mr. Olympia or Magnus ver Magnusen, then OK, maybe you'd be disappointed. But for most guys, a few machines, a couple of racks of freeweights, and a few situp boards are more than adequate.

Maybe it varies by location, though. I'm talking about the one in 22207, on N 14th St.

My sense of places like Golds and other chains is that they're expensive, will box you into renewing, and are overrun with narcissistic, strutting males in tank tops who drive Jeep Wranglers and run around wearing sun visors, aviator glasses, and those embroidered-demon golf shirts people wear in California. I know there's a slang term for this kind of young guy. Think it starts with a d.....

What about Planet Fitness? There's one in Manassas that I used to go to that has a pretty good weightlifting/machine area. They don't have a pool or anything else, it's just a basic gym. I think Planet Fitness is located all around the area too. Best of luck!
