My family is relocating to No Va from California at the end of this month. We are looking to rent a home first so we can get to know the area and find a "friendly" neighborhood. I like a number of rentals in the Herndon area and the schools seem to be very good. I think the Vienna/Fairfax station is the closest metro stop to Herndon. Is this right? How far a drive is the Metro station from Herndon? How long of a commute is it from Vienna/Fairfax metro stop to Foggy Bottom? Is it worth the commute?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts.

It all depends on what part of Herndon you are looking at. We were also California transplants 7 years ago, so welcome! We live in Oakton and are closest to the Folkstone/Franklin Farms section of Herndon and I would say it is at least a 20 min drive to the metro. What is your budget? That will help decide where you want to be.

Might be true today however the Metro is being extended all the way to Dulles Airport right along the Dulles Toll Road corridor so "tomorrow" the answer will be QUITE different.

I agree with the PP. Check out the commuter buses because right now there is no metro or VRE station in Herndon.

My husband works in DC and catches the bus every day to the West Falls Church Metro. It takes about an hour each way but he says it is well worth the fact that he does not have to endure that traffic. Plus the bus takes the HOV lane and it keeps moving. It is worth it to him for our family to live in Herndon. We love it here. Just moved here as well and are very happy.

I don't know where you work, but he is a gov't employee and they pay for the bus/metro whereas he would not be reimbursed if he was driving.

We debated this issue when we first began looking and decided that we wanted our family out in the "burbs" if you can call it that. It was the best choice for our family. We are also renting (a townhouse) until we are more familiar with the area and know where we want to buy. Love it and would not change a thing.

Good luck to ya!

Does it take an hour to get to the West Falls Church metro from your home or is it an hour to his work? My husband will be working near the Foggy Bottom Metro stop. Thank you.

It's an hour total from our townhouse in Herndon to his office near Rosslyn station. Not bad. He is used to it and says it is way worth it!

Oh, and btw, people make it sound like a real pain but he catches the bus just feet from our house, changes at Falls Church and gets off at Rosslyn. Can't beat that...I'd be ill as a hornet all day if I had to fight that traffic.

Just remember that it is summer (I think you just moved here?). Traffic tends to get worse when school starts back up.
