Hi,

I have been searching in vain for a great Gastroenterologist in NOVA / DC area for a while. I 've had a pretty bad acid reflux and would love to find a doctor who is interested in treating the causes not just the symtoms and does not merely prescribe acid blocker.

Any of has a good recommendation based on personal experience? Is there any website that I can use to find doctor references? Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mel

I have found that the doctors at Digestive Disease Physicians in Alexandria, VA are very good. I saw Dr. Peters there for years. He retired and I have recently seen a new doctor there. Another family sees another doctor in that practice also and is very happy.

You do know that acid reflux is either caused by poor diet, being overweight, and/or having an malfunctioning lower esophageal sphincter? Basically, what I am saying is that you need to improve your diet and lose weight (if that applies to you). If those things don't work, you have a faulty valve and only avoiding your triggers is going to help you. The only thing that really works for this condition after that are acid blockers or surgery.

You're right on the money. Things that used to trigger it in me no longer do now that I'm 50 pounds lighter. I can now drink gallons of coffee if I want with no effect. Amazing what losing some heft will do. Sleep apnea's another thing many can say goodbye to at a lower weight.

Vinod Rustgi, MD, has a practice on Route 50 in Falls Church. Hepatology and gastroenterology. One of the very top docs in his speciality. Went to Yale. I know someone personally who has been treated by him, and he did a great job.

My mother has bouts of severe acid reflux when her lupus acts up. I used to have lots of acid reflux before my husband had a heart attack and bypass. With our new 'heart healthy' diet - I only get acid reflux if I eat something really sugary which is very rare.

Though I no longer live in NOVA (thank god), I need to give a plug for a GI Dr. that changed my life. His name is Dr. Gill and he is in Lansdowne (Leesburg). He has been rated one of the top GI Dr's in the country.

I've been a patient of Richard Ranard, who is top-notch, but know from asking around that Safford Goldstein is held in the highest esteem by his peers.

I see Dr. Martin Prosky--same practice as Dr. Goldstein. They are both very good.
