Starting Wednesday, Falls Church residents must use $1 yellow excess trash and yard waste tags for each trash bag that does not fit into their assigned bin.

On the news last night they announced that the city expects to make a tidy sum of revenue from this move. Do you think that this is a revenue issue, and if so will we see other communities following suit?

What do you think of all this?

When I was at a university in western PA, they had this trash fee. I thought it was the strangest thing (granted, I grew up in places where there were public dumps/take it yourself).

So, you had to buy these tags for a certain amount of $ and then tie it onto your bag of trash. The city would not pick up the bag without the tag.

There were also cases of theft (people stealing tags from bags), so they made sure that the tags had super-sticky backsides. Once they adhered, they could not be removed without being torn apart.

I live in Arlington and would support this. So tired of seeing our neighbors put all kinds of junk out on the street, stuff overflowing their bin; it's just unsightly. Why should I subsidize the garbage collection of someone with three or four kids? Or someone who just produces a lot of trash? Pay your own way, people.

I believe many European countries make you pay for trash pickup by weight.

I think its a great idea; I live in a condo.. the trash at our dumpster is insane on the weekends especially by Sunday. The trash compactor is not full yet people sit their trash beside it and others I guess assume its full and it builds up. The trash gets stacked 3 high inside the fence even though the compactor is not near full (it a fenced in area with one side open that you walk into and use the compacter). I spoke to a lady one day and helped her put OUR NEIGHBORHOODS trash into the compacter for them. She said she was on the board and hates to see lazy people do this with their trash. I myself would hate to have to stare at this off my balcony like some lucky enough to have balcony that overlooks the trash bin. People are lazy and they dump stuff they shouldnt like applicances, tires and furniture too. I wish our assocation could find out who is doing it but she said its really no way to.

Man, I can't imagine producing that much trash. We asked our trash company if we could go down to one pick up a week instead of paying for 2x, but we couldn't. Usually I don't even have to put the trash can out once a week. Every other week is usually enough.

Twice a week? Wow! I had no idea any place picked up that often. Mind saying what county you live in? We get weekly pickup and like you, it's often more than we really need. (We put just about everything in the recycling bin, and most weeks I only put out one bin or the other.)

When I lived in Loudoun County, we had trash pick-ups twice a week.

Out here in Winchester, we get it picked up once a week which is fine. We may only put out 1 or 2 bags (kitchen size) of trash. We recycle everything we possible can and I have a compost pile in the back. It really does cut down on trash. I wonder if FFX Co is doing this to encourage recycling and composting?

I think this is purely revenue like red light cameras and aggressive traffic policing.

AAA has twice a week pick-up in Springfield but they allowed us to go down to once a week. Didn't save us very much $ though ... maybe $5/month.

We have AAA in Fairfax County. We just switched from American. Both pick up trash twice a week, recycling once a week, and yard waste once a week.
My trash can is huge, and the recycling bin is almost as big. They are those tall cans on wheels.
