Is this a walkable area? I will not have a car and will rely on the bus/metro system since I'm only staying for a month. What about safety?

Those are the ones at the end of 4 miles run, by Columbia pike, right?

I wouldn't consider it walkable at all. There is an off brand supermarket about a mile away (Food Star, I think?) and a Goodwill around the corner, but that's about it. In the other direction, Shirlington is about 2 miles away, with a Harris Teeter and a bunch of restaurants and a library. There's really not a whole lot in between, except a few gas stations and the parks and rec center.

It's not dangerous, but it's not the greatest area. You can look up crime reports online if you're interested.

There's a Carlton House condo bldg in Reston, too, near the Reston Town Center. I would say that area is walkable. It's on the NE corner of Reston Parkway and Sunset Hills.

I used the walkscore website when I was searching for a place to live to see the walkability of the neighborhoods in Arlington. Here's your address here: Walk Score of 4600 four mile run arlington va There are many busses that go down Columbia Pike, most of them start with 16 which either go to Pentagon or Pentagon City Metro stops. There is also the 45 bus which goes to the Rosslyn Metro stop (weekdays only.) There is no great grocery store nearby, but you can use the busses to get you to Giant closer to the Pentagon, or to the Safeway or Trader Joe's at the Bailey's Crossroads shopping center. It's not the most dangerous place in the world, but I wouldn't walk in the area by myself late at night. As CaliTerp says, there's not much nearby, but I do like a new restaurant near there called Sauca, and there are various other ethnic restaurants nearby.
