I have a couple of old bracelets and some charms that I haven't worn for years. Thinking about taking them to a jewelry store that will give me cash for them (they're lightweight, so I doubt I'd walk out with more than a couple of twenties).

Have you done this? Any places to recommend? (Other than selling on Craigslist or eBay)

I don't have any places to recommend, but I am sure wishing I wore gold these days! One of my co-workers sold some of hers by our office in Rockville and got a check for a little over $3,000. I think it was Gold Buyers or something like that but I know most of us don't work in MD. The people seemed nice though.

I hope others have been just as lucky.

From what I've heard, you get about 20% or so of the value when selling - you MIGHT be better off selling to an individual but even then you'd need to know the Carat and weight, etc.

We got pretty close to eBay prices when selling gold locally - definitely not 20% of value. We have a grams scale and weighed what we had and then compared. I am a seller on eBay and need to take out fees each time I sell plus the chance that the buyer would be unhappy. For a slightly lower price, we got cash. My MIL sold some gold coins that she had. I don't remember the exact pricing, but they were selling for about $400 on eBay, and in the store, they gave her about $375. It was totally worth it. We sell ours in Vienna on the corner of East Street and Maple Avenue. If you do a search, we had a thread about this not too long ago.

I sold some pieces that I had lying around unworn for years and got a $1300 check for them. I had a few 18 carat pieces and the rest were 14 carat. I was quite surprised, as I thought I might get $200 at most. I went to a small place in Warrenton VA. I've been told to stay away from the gold-buying events that advertise at hotels, as they will rip you off.

I sold some TODAY! Cleaning out, getting ready to move...

Jewlery by Design on Prince William Parkway... and yeah, I thought mine was lightweight but I got some serious $$$. A friend referred me there, worth the drive.

A friend also recommended this place to me. She said they buy silver, too.
