Take 29S to 40. It is a great route I use all the time going to NC. Just make sure you stay on 29 when it turns in Charlottesville and Lynchburg.

Route 29 all the way to Greensboro and then west on I-40.

I've made that trip hundreds of times. It's a beautiful drive without all the heavy traffic of the interstates.

Just be careful of Amherst County speed traps (between Charlottesville and Lynchburg).

Good luck.

Wow thank you so much everyone, you have all been extremely helpful. I am going to try the 29S to 40W this Friday because I am going down again. Traffic was bad last friday but I think extra heavy because of Labor Day weekend. Planning on leaving around 7pm to avoid some more traffic.

What is the best way to get to 29S? 50 to 29? any back roads to 29 I should know of, or where it is best to join 29?

Thanks again everyone, I am very grateful for the help!!!

QUICK QUESTION---would it be smart to wait until 7pm? Or do you think traffic will not be too much of a problem if I leave at 5:30pm ish after work?

I would obviously love to get down asap, but if I get in at the same time might as well leave at 7pm. How is 29 around 6pm up near Mclean?

Also, anyone know the mph of 29S? Thanks everyone!

Yes, if I had a choice I would wait until 7:00 p.m.( or 5 a.m., Saturday for daytime driving--then you'll really cruise--I once went from the Haymarket area to Greensboro in a little over 4 hrs).

The traffic headed south on 29 is very heavy during evening "rush hour". I'd also pick it up as far south as comfortable -- take I-66 to Route 29. It'll be fairly heavy until you get past Warrenton. But then the road will open up. You'll even miss the traffic around Charlottesville that late in the evening. Keep an eye out for deer, especially south of Charlottesville.

Have a safe trip and watch that speed in Amherst County!
