Besides Starbucks (and the Starbucks...) and Caribou? There's Northside Social on Wilson but closer to Shirlingon is Buzz Bakery in Potomac Yards.

Ah, thanks for the response. I'll be checking the Buzz Bakery out sometime. Is it usually full?

Linda's Cafe on Lee Highway! It's a real gem. An old-school diner where the waitresses recognize you and call you pet names. Just east of George Mason Drive.

Busboys and Poets seems more like a place to sit and eat rather than hang out. Unless you can request to sit somewhere and just have coffee

I don't think any business paying a lot for seating space (which by definition occurs in Arlington) would stay in business long, if it encouraged people to simply hang out for a long time without paying for anything except a cup of coffee.

And, there are a lot of things going on at B&P besides eating.

True... I just need somewhere to sit and write with a nice cup of coffee to keep me going. I guess Barnes and Noble is my only real choice

If its not peak hours, I think a lot of places wouldn't mind you writing and drinking coffee. I mean especially if you don't just order a small regular coffee and make it last 3 hours. Use your common sense - if there are few free tables, either buy something regularly or leave. If the place is empty, I don't think you need to feel bad about nursing your drink.

Beyond the obvious places in Shirlington, you could go over to Bradlee on rte 7 - in addition to the Starbucks, they have Alexandria Pastry Shop, a nice place to hang out.

If you can go a bit further, this place near Clarendon alway seems to have lots of folks hanging out using wifi and drinking coffee or wine

Northside Social - Coffee & Wine on Wilson Boulevard in Clarendon – Arlington, Virginia

We tend to pass there on our evening walks in nice weather, when their abundance of outdoor tables gives them a lot of room. During inclement weather, I dont know how crowded the indoor space gets.

A place Ive gone and like, in Del Ray, is St Elmos Coffee Pub - Del Ray neighborhood coffee shop, breakfast, lunch, meetings, music, live entertainment - pastries, bagels, catering, best, good, local, Saint Elmo's - in Alexandria, Virginia Va near Old Town, Crystal City, Pentagon City, Potom

Of course if you don't want any more coffee, there are a number of very attractive public libraries in the area with WiFi access.

Linda's has a lunch-counter area, and I don't think it's crowded other than on weekend mornings. I'm pretty sure they'd welcome a coffee-only customer, especially at the non-busy times.
