I am moving to the D.C area to work as a police officer in the District. My ex-wife and my son are looking at relocating to the Stafford/Fredericksburg area.

I am looking for suggestions on a good place for me to live that is a happy medium between D.C and where my son will be.

How far out from D.C would you suggest is the FARTHEST I should go without having a nightmare commute to work every day?

Personally I think anything further south than PWC is too much of a commute. Obviously others have different comfort levels for commuting but that's mine.

Living within 5 miles of the vienna metro station it still takes my girlfriend a good hour to get to work in DC.

Lorton? My friend lives in Lorton. Her husband works in downtown, and her father used to live in Fredericksburg. It was a good jumping off point for both.

Any ideas on what your hours might be?

I think Springfield is a good choice.

Those schedules shouldn't be a problem at all, save some random late night construction work. You may catch the tail end of traffic heading in for the 7pm shift.
