I've done this commute and can tell you it's about 25-30 min on the commuter bus from Reston to WFC metro. From there you take the Orange line, change at
Metro Center, the Red Line to Union Stn.

The whole trip in rush hour takes between 75-100 minutes depending on how you time
the connector bus.

Meaning that the trips don't necessarily take as long as the schedule indicates?

There are also a few buses from the Springfield/Burke area that go up the 395 HOV lanes. I live off Rolling Road and Old Keene Mill and on occasion I'll take the 18P from OKM to Pentagon - takes about 15-20 minutes depending on the time of day. Then from Pentagon you could take the train in to Union.
