We're moving into the area in about 3 weeks and are looking for a place to live. I'll be working in Chantilly near 28 & 50, and while all the nearby housing is nice, we can afford much more in Manassas. We're looking at these townhomes off 28 in "Old Town Manassas" (K. Hovanian's Lee Square if that helps).

Google Maps calls it 11 miles and 20 minutes to work. What's the straight dope? I have an hour-long commute currently and I absolutely can not tolerate continuing it when we move.

Commuting from Manassas to the Big Blue Spy Building Complex should be delightful. The real backup starts a little further eastward. Heading back shouldn't be bad, either.

I live in Manassas and work in Chantilly right off of 28. I take back roads to Manassas Park, and then get on 28 at that point. I hate it, but it's not nearly as bad as 66 or roads closer to DC. I leave the house around 7:20 and arrive at work either right at 8 or anywhere from 7:50-7:55 depending on if there is a holiday or if it's on a Friday. 9 times out of 10 I arrive spot on the nose at my computer at 8am. It's not a bad commute because I've figured out some back roads.

I am 9.5 miles from my job - I live in the Fairmont "area" of Manassas, so it's not much farther than where you're coming from.

Best of luck!

My co worker lives in Gainesville and it takes her about 35-40 minutes to arrive in Chantilly. She leaves at 7am to make it by 8. She takes 66 mainly but has taken 29 and other roads. A bunch of people I work with live in Haymarket, Gainesville, Bristow, Woodbridge, and several are in Manassas/Manassas Park. It's not a bad commute. Sorry to overrun your post!
