Got some useful info earlier, but now our location and day of week have changed. We'll be driving from the Westin Arlington Gateway Hotel at 801 North Glebe Road to Union Station this coming Thursday morning. Need to return our rental car and check in for the 10:55 a.m. southbound Amtrak. Ideally would like to get to Union Station by 9, to relax and grab a bite to eat before getting on the train. How early would we need to leave the hotel?

Google Maps estimates 18-19 minutes (presumably non rush hour!), with two optins: Washington Blvd. and 395, or I-66 (car pool requirement on 66? There will be two of us in the car). Suggested routes on a typical morning rush hour?

Do not take 395 in rush hour; it is a pitiful nightmare. There are two of you, so you can take I-66 to Constitution all the way through most of DC, bearing left on PA Ave, then turning left onto Louisiana, which takes you right to Union Station. This route I'd say will take you about 25 minutes--about 10 to DC, then I'd say another 15 to get across DC. I'd allot 45 minutes just to be safe.

I would probably leave at 8, just to be safe. There is no way you'll be late if you do that. I'd rather have time to kill than be stressed worrying if I'm gonna miss the train.

Here's another option: what if you switched to a hotel near Union Station Weds night, turning in your car early (and saving a little $), and then walking to Union Station the next morning?

It may seem crazy, but I did something similar when traveling overseas (after reading a suggestion from a fellow traveler on TripAdvisor) and it was great not to be worried about getting to the airport on time. The hotel near the airport was a lot nicer than the one I stayed in previously too, which was a bonus.

We did think of that, but had business in Virginia and booked the hotel through Priceline, so no cancellation.

Thanks for the tips, everyone.
