I am looking to buy a townhouse. Haymarket seems very affordable for my budget. I only have to go to DC twice a week in the afternoon. So I am wondering if the commute is doable. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Driving inbound in the afternoon shouldn't be a big problem but this is the DC area so anything can happen. I 66 approaching the beltway (495) seems to back up daily for a short distance but overall the majority of traffic will going the opposite way from your inbound drive.

Definitely doable in the afternoons. Still not really a commute I would like though.

I think the commute is definitely doable in the afternoons. My neighbor works evenings in DC and has no problems and we live in Gainesville. Just FYI some of the really reasonable priced townhouses in Gainesville/Haymarket are zoned as condos so you would have a monthly condo fee as well. So just make sure to have your Realtor check that out for you.

While your drive to DC in the afternoon should be ok, when do you plan to return to Haymarket?

I plan to leave for work at around noon, and return between 6pm and 7pm.

Thank you for the information. I am looking at the new construction by Winchester homes at the Villages of Piedmont at Leopold's Preserve. It looks like a nice area, and the HOA is around 100.

Yes that is a nice community! Those are listed in the MLS as Fee Simple as opposed to Condo ownership. The Parks at Piedmont are zoned Condo though, just so you know. Are you thinking of buying a spec home or having one built? The advertised price is normally the base price then depending on options you choose the price will increase from there. The immediate delivery homes are normally priced out with the upgrades included.

Oh and commute heading home from DC will be a problem at 6. You will run into HOV restrictions on 66 and traffic. After 7 you should be pretty clear though.

Thank you for your advice. That's very helpful. I am looking at the quick delivery / immediate move-in homes so the price should include the upgrades.

It seems to me that the comps in this area are being sold at $140-$150 per sq ft. Is it a reasonable estimate?

Also I did some research on Zillow.com and it shows that over the past five years, the prices of homes in Haymarket basically remained unchanged. So I am also thinking about building equity when buying my first house. Do you have any thoughts on the real estate market trend in the Haymarket area in general?
