Due to the large number of unincorporated communities assigned the name Sterling, as well as the tendency for people to say "Sterling" when they mean "Sterling Park", it's quite possible to be in Sterling, stop and ask for directions, and be told "Oh you have to drive to Sterling for that. That's a ways from here, maybe ten miles or so."

Also, if you walked down the street in my neighborhood and asked people what community they lived in, you could get four different answers. (Cascades, Lowes Island, Potomac Falls, and Sterling).

"Gotta run, late for my flight at National..."

"Don't you mean Reagan airport?"

"Whatever."

I enjoyed reading this! I was just at the Pentagon recently. I briefly glanced into the courtyard, but I don't recall if there's a gazebo there. There are definitely some massive magnolias.

For those who haven't been, the Pentagon is impressive the first time you go. Like a giant airport, with miles of terazzo, tons of historical displays, and a wee mall in one corner. No stores as big as Woody's nowadays--but it does have the tiniest Best Buy I've ever seen.

I think it'd be funny to open up a lingerie shop there and call it the Panty-Gon. Or perhaps the Panty-Gone.

"I live in Fairfax"

County or City?

"I live in Alexandria"

That structure in the middle of the Pentagon courtyard is the "Ground Zero Cafe"....so named because legend has it that the Russians had nukes aimed at it. Makes sense....it is the bullseye.

They sell (or did when I was there) burgers and stuff out there.

I say I live near the Mixing Bowl... that confuses people until they've driven to my house (to which they answer, "I see why you call it that now.")
