We have a relatively small yard and would like to have a fence installed. I'm considering the plastic, although I'm not crazy about the sometimes cheap look of it. I like the no maintenance of it, however. If you have one how do you like it?

Also, anyone know how high a fence can be? Yeah, I'd like to get some privacy from a very nosy neighbor. I can't catch a break to drink my morning coffee in my pj's without him bothering me.

Arl. County has rules regarding height and (I think) materials that can be used. You must get a permit for at least some fences, e.g., privacy fences above a certain height. It's easy to find the rules on its website.

Height--6' or less, not including a decorative lattice add-on.

Material--Anything, as long as it's not a wall. The plastic the OP refers to is composite--and there are two types: PVC (the cheap shiny crap) and cellular (looks more like wood; they use this on the Old Town Alexandria boardwalk and a lot of park benches nowadays). Composite is mucho dinero. Probably cheaper to go with cedar and just let it turn gray. Definitely do not go with pressure-treated pine, because it will warp as it dries.

Permit: I believe it's no permit needed for 3' height or less. (And I'm betting a lot of people skip getting a permit when they repace their old fences.)

Or you could plant tall hedges, like rose of Sharon or even clumping (not running!) bamboo.

I can speak speak well for Rick Poppleton and Expert Fence in Alexandria. High quality materials and workmanship. Not typically the cheapest guys in town, but prices are quite reasonable considering the level of quality you'll get back and be able to appreciate for years. Flexible when it comes to out of the ordinary wants and needs as well. We have such for a considerably larger than average property in the Vienna/Oakton area and have used them for a couple of decades now. They have never disappointed.

C, if you don't get a permit, you run the risk of the fence co's not being willing to install it or, when you sell, the buyers' wanting to knock $ off or insist on changes (or the neighbors' possibly making trouble). It's easy to get a permit if you follow the rules-- you just may have to stand in line awhile.

Also, IIRC, chain link is not permitted.
