Good place to live commutable to Herndon and Wilmington DE? (apartment, renting)

Hi, We live in Philadelphia, with one of us working in Wilmington DE and the other considering a job offer in Herndon. We're not sure it's feasible but thought I'd seek assistance here.


So if we move away from Philadelphia, we'd like to move somewhat in between Wilmington and Herndon. I've been reviewing the usual sources for homes, train options, etc. but would like recommendations for nice towns that would offer a reasonable commute by car (train is bonus) to both locations. Meaning that one of us would head north each morning and the other would head south.


On or near water would be a huge bonus too. We are flexible regarding townhouse vs. house, renting vs. buying and school district is not a factor other than as a resale factor for any house we might purchase.

Edited for clarification - seeking potential towns IN BETWEEN Wilmington and Herndon which are about 130 miles apart.

These kinds of questions are getting crazier and crazier. I don't think it is feasible at all, unless one of you has a helicopter.

If the Herndon to Delaware commute was feasible, My hubby would have kept the San Diego job and commuted to Virginia! Lol!

Not Herndon TO Wilmington, trying to find where to live in between so we can each head in our own direction for the respective commute-

This is crazy, but if you both want insane commutes the in between is to live somewhere near Baltimore, MD.

OP, what do you consider a reasonable commute? I can't envision a scenario where you and your spouse are not commuting for hours each day.

If the job is something you all just can't turn down, perhaps the best solution would be for one or the other to have a small apartment in that city - be it Herndon or Wilmington (I'd go with the cheapest CoL) and live there during the week while coming home on the weekends.

you can play around with google maps, but I put in leaving Wilmington at 6:00 am and it says the commute 2 hrs 20 minutes TO 3 hrs 20 minutes.

I know. Traffic notwithstanding, it would seem splitting the 130 mi distance would be reasonable but I don't think it's going to happen so long as we have to use 95.


Thanks, an apartment is an option if we're willing to be apart during the week.

I know a few living in PA or NC and work here in NoVA. Yes, they living in someone's basement and go home every two weeks (long weekend). Can you work from home in your line of work?
