I voted for MD suburbs. I have friends that live in Bethesda and Columbia, our adoption agency is in Silver Spring, our kids were born in Baltimore County. We go to Maryland for entertainment and activities (upcoming: spending the 4th of July at the Inner Harbor; going to the Annapolis Irish Festival on the 14th). And we don't even have to Beltway; depending on time of day, we head up to Frederick and take I-70 east (or a few times we have even taken Whites Ferry to get to something in Gaithersburg).

I've only ever been to Richmond once, back in 1996 (not counting driving through it on I-95). I have been on one weekend visit each to Charlottesville, Williamsburg, and Virginia Beach but I don't feel connected to those areas at all. Being in Loudoun, I even feel more connected to parts of West Virginia (Harpers Ferry/Charles Town) and Frederick County, MD than I do to "RoVA"; I go to these places quite often.

I would've voted "New Jersey," but it wasn't an option, so I went with "Maryland suburbs of D.C."

You don't have an option for neither. I don't the MD suburbs since I grew up there and have to trek there every two weeks to visit the parentals. ROVA has too many families with children. No, thank you.

I really want to check out Baltimore more closely. Seems like it has a lot of interesting urban photography opportunity.
What about Williamsburg? That is a great spot down there and it seems like one of the unofficial vacation spots for DC area residents. I know it's not a lot down there, but for shopping, Busch Gardens and restaurants it's a great place to visit, wouldn't you agree?

Hmmm. When the Pottery Factory is one of the bigger deals in town, I'd say the place has a ways to go yet as a cultural mecca.

people don't go there for culture, they go there to get away from this area.

Maybe because I'm a Virginian by heritage I tend to identify more with RoVA.

The shopping and restaurants are better in Williamsburg than in NoVa? Really? Meanwhile, people everywhere take vacations and travel to destinations near and far. Even if they live in the south of France. It has nothing to do with with wanting to "get away from this area", no matter what area "this area" is.

I grew up in the MD suburbs and exited as soon as I could. That said, I voted for Maryland just because I have no history with or attachment to ROVA.

Lived in both, like Virginia better.

It's a much better state than Maryland.
