I'll move to a new apartment building in Alexandria, VA, soon. It seems that they only use Cox for High-speed Internet access.

Cox' best offer is 1 Mbps for $75/month (include TV and phone service), don't know if the speed would be too low for my VPN access (for my job) and Voip (Voice over internet /phone) because the phone service will be dependent on the internet speed. On top of $75/month, I'll have to pay installation fee plus monthly equipment rental fee, and of course taxes. If I want wireless internet, they would charge additional fee.

I currently use Verizon with a internet speed of 50 Mbps. With triple play, it only costs me about $95/month all included with a corporate discount.

It seems that I'll have to downgrade my internet speed from 50 Mbps to 1 Mbps, and will pay more. I wonder if there are other internet options for me so that I don't have to use Cox.

My criteria about the service provider: Internet speed is most important. I also need basic TV service, and home phone service. Therefore, if a single provider can provide "triple play", that would be the best. However, I can go with a Voip (Voice over internet /phone) provider to attach a phone to the internet, if they don't provide home phone service.

Any advice?

Is there some reason why Cox is only offering the 1Mbps service? They have service that goes up to 50/5Mbps. You don't have to rent the cable modem, you can buy your own.

Cox' highest speed is 20 Mbps in their offer. See attached files for all of the options that they offer for my new apartment building. I don't see a speed anywhere close to 50 Mbps. Did I miss anything?

Cox Cable and Verizon DSL are the only Internet options in the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County unless the building is wired for Verizon FIOS.

Does Verizon DSL offer the same speed/performance/cost as Verizon FIOS? BTW, I like Verizon FIOS.

With a 2-year triple-play deal, FiOS is faster and cheaper than Cox. At least for now. Remember that Home Depot was cheaper than Hechinger's until Hechinger's went out of business. Then HD prices rose while its inventory and service levels plummeted.

It would meanwhile be unlikely that typical voip or vpn requirements would challenge what Cox has to offer. I did it with them for many years and never had anything even approaching a problem. You might notice a difference with FiOS if you have say two or three teenagers on your home network who all want do a ton of streaming or heavy duty gaming all night long.

Don't have Cox anymore, but I didn't have or need whizbang speed for any sort of work. That included signficant website and database migrations. With FiOS, I have 35/35, and at the moment, I'm testing at 21 up and 36 down, almost none of which I need either, certainly not at C-D.

DSL is considerably slower than FIOS, and generally slower than cable as well.

Why do some people say they've got 50 mbps speed with Cox? The Gold Bundle Cox offers is only 25 mbps. https://secure.cox.com/Service/Store...opint-btn2_nva
