We are travelling from Tennessee to Pennsylvania to see family and are planning our trek via the BRP and Shenandoah NP. My question is this - one night we will be staying in Bridgewater, VA (just south of Harrisonburg). If we end up going south at the start of the day to do the FULL park from South to North (via the Waynesboro entrance), I fear our day will be pretty long (we are trying to get to Nazareth, PA by early evening).

Obviously, we can enter the park via Elkton/33 to save time and go north from there, but it looks like we will miss the southern portion of the park. My question is whether missing that smaller southern portion is a horrible idea or if the northern part is great as well? I don't know how the sights are laid out and can't seem to get an idea from my travel planning books... any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Phil

I assume you are talking about the Skyline Drive? If so, ride it up to 211 and exit here towards Luray. (West) 211 is a nice ride in itself and you can take it back to I 81. Once you've done this part of Skyline you've seen the best part.

Yes - we are wondering if missing the portion between I64 and HWY33 will be a shame or not.

Thanks,
Phil

The southern end is generally favored by most people but you can't go wrong on any of it. The scenic pull offs all pretty much offer the same views after a while. Just pick any portion and you'll be fine.

The part *immediately* north of US 33 was sort of 'blah' to me (relative to the rest of the Drive), but from Big Meadows northward you really get excellent views and there are also a couple good waysides to stop and view + spots to grab a bite to eat. I did the section from US 33 to Front Royal in about 3.5 hours, with stops. If you're staying in Bridgewater, I wouldn't backtrack...start from 33 and head north.

Whatever you do, don't plan on driving down the whole skyline drive. You get rather bored of it and tired of the windy, slow journey. We did it once, and it really got old after awhile.
