Tomorrow (August 7th) is "National Night Out" (NNO) and I was curious as to how many communities in NoVa are participating.

For those that don't know about it, NNO is at it's core about organizing for crime prevention (i.e., Neighborhood Watch) but it is a good way to meet neighbors, local police officers, firemen and others.

Kind of ironic when most crime happens when people aren't home don't you think? It just feeds irrational crime paranoia. How about a day when we dont drive to prevent car accidents or don't go outside to avoid lyme disease? Those are a lot more of a problem than crime.

The Annandale Patch posted a listing of NNO events in the Annandale area.

I think you missed the point. Of course it happens when we aren't home, that is why we should get to know our neighbors. It does not promote "staying home", but simply getting to know one's neighbors and local law enforcement and fire fighters and to foster building a sense of community.

Hmmmm.... you know what, I could see both those ideas working.

As for the original question, I've never actually participated in one of these events but I think a lot of communities do. I'm not sure which ones. In Cascades we have a fair number of "meet your neighbor" events but I'm not sure if there's anything organized for NNO.

By the way, if you live in Cascades an upcoming "meet your neighbor" event is outdoor movie night at the pool on Saulty. The movie Aug. 17th is Moneyball, and you can watch while swimming, or lounging on the pool chairs.

our courtyard within our subdivision had a cook out/pot luck, but we do on July 4, and at least one other weekend every summer. This was only different in that we had a FFX police officer show up with things for the kiddies.
