Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens is wonderfully, and they have several spaces to have a wedding, and even have two inside reception spaces. Only problem is that it is on the North side of Richmond...

I was also going to suggest the botanical gardens, but I see it's been mentioned. I know how challenging it is to find JUST the right setting for something you've got pictured in your mind. We got married on 10/10/10 and visited who knows how many different potential locations before we finally settled on one. Our challenge was getting the right atmoshpere as well as the right size space - apparently, if you're having a smll gathering, it's hard to find a good venue around here!

There are some gardens in Old Town Alexandria that you can do a wedding in. Not sure on how big of a crowd it can hold.
If you need a Caterer, I would recommend Alice and Louise Caterers. Aliceandlouisecater.com

The American Horticultural Society south of Old Town on the GW parkway might fit the bill. I had a cousin get married there. The Indoor seating is pretty limited, though.

None of them are exactly what I think you're looking for (I'm a Secret Garden fan too, and I think I can see what you're seeing for your wedding), but they do evoke that feel. The Goodstone Inn does have this amazing ivy-covered wall, though, that you'd probably love. There are excellent pics of it here. That's not my blog, BTW.
While the OP did not provide a budget, a wedding at the Goodstone will be very, very, very expensive.

I saw an article in the WAPO the other day that showed numbers for people and their weddings. Absolutely amazing what people are willing to spend for a one day event.

It would probably be expensive (many weddings are these days - I know because my sister just got married) but while we are making suggestions, the OP may want to look at Creighton Farms
