I need sand for animals to walk in (to decrease muddy ground). I am not wanting to buy 50 pound bags at 3-4 dollars a bag because I am sure I will need a lot of it.

Does anyone know where I could find either cheaper bags OR sand that is sold in a larger quantity for a cheaper price?

I have heard that you can get a yard for $15 - but not sure where. I'm in PW county.

You might try Luck Stone. My DH has purchased gravel (not sand) from them by the truck. I think the sell sand as well.

Try Sisler Stone on Lee Highway. Or Craigslist. (I got gravel that way one time.)

Try the local nurseries. If you're close to the landfill on 234 in eastern PWC, http://parsonsfarm.com/ that sells that stuff

I agree on Craiglist, ask on Freecycle also - some folks will probably be giving away their sandbags after the threat of flooding is over.

The sand is cheap...delivery is what costs.

A yard of sand weighs 2500-2700 pounds so you need a serious truck to haul it. The average pick-up truck doesn't come close.

I've dealt with Springfield Topsoil and they were reasonable.

PS: Generally, these companies do not dump it where you want it, they dump it on the driveway, and you'll need a wheelbarrow(s) to get it where you need it to be.

Why would you want sand instead of gravel/crushed stone?

He probably figures it's easier on his pets' feet--but I'd actually go with bark mulch.

The sand won't hold moisture like wood shavings or mulch or bark. The chickens also eat parts of it for grit, which is good for their digestive system. It's not the fine playground sand, it's slightly more course - "all purpose" is what home depot calls it.

I already posted on craigslist. I'll check freecycle.

I did call a few places - but like everyone noted, it's going to cost me to have it delivered so I'm trying to either find a way to get it myself or... I don't know yet

I think there's a lot of it on the streets of the Jersey shore.
