Lately I have been having an issue on Fios with reception of USA9 (CBS). It is supposed to be channel 509 on my Fairfax area Fios. I recorded two shows on the Fios DVR (Criminal Minds & CSI) and when I went to watch them, all I had was two hours of what looked to be USA9 Weather. It was just various slides--radar, 7- day forecast, etc with background music playing.

I assume that the channel that taped was their over the air channel 9.2 or 9.3 since it was just weather, and it was in standard definition, not the usual hi-def. Very odd, and I can't figure out why this would happen with the cable, so I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else. And if anyone has a clue about why this happens. I dread calling Fios customer service, since they have never been helpful in the past... I watch a lot of CBS shows, and I don't like not being able to record them.

Hmmm... never had this issue for me, although I don't record those 2 shows. At least those shows should be available for on demand viewing I think?

Similar has happened to us. We tune in to the standard def CBS channel, but when we flip to the high-def equivalent, it's just weather. We have to flip back and forth a few times before it seems to fix itself.

Try recording channel 509 and watching it at the same time next and compare your results. It is a problem with the distribution of the channel on the FiOS platform or your set top box/dvr is going bad.

I did that last night. When I first turned 509 on, it was the weather, then flipped away and back to it and it was CBS HD. I watched at the time I was recording it because I didn't want to miss the shows again. I've only had the box for a year, and it was new when I got it, so I am thinking it is a Fios problem. Not sure what can be done about it, though. If the standard def CBS can record, I might just have to settle for the bluriness of SD. Not sure I want to risk two hours of the weather every time I want to tape a CBS show.

From your experience is the standard def CBS more reliable (in terms of not being just weather!) than the HD 509? Thanks.

Yeah, I've only ever had the random weather problem on the high-def channel.

I had an issue once with the CBS channel. Mine was a little different. I was getting the CBS channel on the NBC channel. I chalked it up to "stray electrons". I rebooted my box and it fixed the problem. It has never happened again but I have never had the weather channel beaming on 509. I wonder why it would happen on some boxes (homes) but not others?
