The Saranac development in Gainesville is new, but with that budget you could probably get a house on the lake with a really nice view. Not a bad commute to Leesburg but obviously not ideal if still working. Another area I would look at is Bull Run Mountain. The views in the Evergreen neighborhood where the country club is gorgeous. Since this is just off Route 15, it's closer to Leesburg. You would get a lot more bang for buck.

I second Bull Run Mountain! So, a trip into the city is a little farther....but it's a very nice area....and you can always do the occasional overnight in downtown DC to really make the night a treat!

There are homes on Lawyers road between Vienna and Reston. Some have streams and ponds large enough to need a boat. Country living with easy access to Vienna and Reston.

My first thought was Reston, like several PPs. My second thought is Lake Barcroft. Both have some architecturally neat homes, though modern rather than arts and crafts. Then there are some nice neighborhoods in Alexandria with pretty views of the Potomac, or nice walking trails - maybe even Hollin Hills - though Alexandria has, of the three, the worst drive to Leesburg.
