I'm not sure Route 1 could be widened. There are a lot of businesses that don't have much of a setback on Route 1. It'd cost a lot of money to buy out those businesses. I can't even count how many car dealerships there are right on Route 1 in PWC.

Prince William should plan on using VRE. Both lines go through PW. Personally I think it is nicer to ride VRE then the metro. PW also has commuter busses and slug lines. So there are alternatives to car travel.

Exactly, why spend billions more, when we already have the infrastructure in place. I could see justifying expanding Metro to Dulles, because that area didn't have any rail services, but the Woodbridge and Manassas/Gainesville corridors do. VRE could be expanded to run trains every hour during the week and on weekends (like New Jersey Transit and SEPTA ) and take a lot of cars off the road. I would certainly pay the $10-20 bucks to not have to sit in traffic on 66 to get to DC.

These politicians don't use their brains at all. I think that is why we have the mess that we have today.

Bingo bango.

Im sure many people might think I would be on the side of MORE TRAINS! But this plan will create more sprawl, more subsidization for poor land use, and create more dependence on vehicles. Increasing VRE, or creating a more consistent bus network is far for appropriate. I still believe that the best improvement that can be made for people who live in PWC (of whom I am friends with many) would be to create a limited access HOV-3/Bus lane on I-66, giving them an option to get to Tysons or Arlington in the same amount of time that a train would do. Yes this would cost money also, but on the order of 400-500 million for true lane separation. With that time incentive people WILL ride the bus. The reason people don't right now, is because there is no time incentive.

Give people back an hour a day of their time and they will pay 10 bucks per day to get it.

Best of all, the bus system could be run at FAR smaller operational cost than a train and WMATA. FFX Connector operational cost, for instance, is about 1/2 the cost of equivalent WMATA buses. Shocking what happens when you dont have 35% benefits packages.

The trains only run one direction - towards DC in the morning, away from DC in the evening. The trains don't run very often. The trains are more expensive than the metro. The trains only have limited endpoints, therefore is less convenient to as many workplaces - for instances you can't travel for Centerville to work in Woodbridge right now but with the expansion you could. I get that based on today's travel patterns it could be argued that not many people need that, but that's because residence choices are often made based on commuting options, so if the lines were built people would start to expand their options and the services would be used.

Not a single person will be riding the metro from Centreville to woodbridge in the current hub and spoke system. They'd have to go all the way into rosslyn, then change to the blue line and go all the way out. What Virginia should be doing is linking the Alexandria stations to the Tysons, Vienna and Dunn Loring stations via a line paralleling the beltway. Throw Maryland a bone and send the line to the National Harbor while you're at it.

Sure, sure, sure.... but I want the metro to come to Woodbridge, that's all I care about - I'm selfish like that. I prefer the metro over the VRE for the reasons I listed. I'm not really interested in going to Centreville, I just wanted to add in another reason.

Well, living in Woodbridge, I'd be happy to have Metro down here, but I have other options to get to work. I've never ridden VRE, it's too expensive for me to afford. However, I work in DC and eventually hope to live closer to the city. By the time this is implemented, it probably wouldn't be much use to me except to go to Potomac Nationals games.

Ha. Funny you should mention Tysons Corner.

//www.city-data.com/forum/north...deal-rift.html

Despite the OP's concerns in that thread, I believe the consensus was that any criminals who attempted to conduct mall "business" via the Silver Line would likely be apprehended long before they got on the train...not to mention that the area would benefit from sorely needed traffic relief.

As it is, Woodbridge already fights stereotypes about some of its own residents. Unless the would-be station is located right off Potomac Mills - and I doubt it would even be much of an issue then - I don't envision a bunch of marauding Marylanders and ne'er-do-well Washingtonians invading Woodbridge between rush hour.
