I'm moving from NJ to D.C. area after graduation with a job at Deloitte. Start date is September 2nd, home office is in Rosslyn, but clients are spread apart in the DMV.

I'll be living with at least 2-3 other people so i'll need a 3-4 bedroom place. Is $1000/bedroom possible within walking distance to the metro possible? I'm not going to bring a car.

If i'm looking to move-in to a rental place near the metro in arlington during mid-august, when is a good time to start looking? What's the best way to get good deals on apartments/townhouses/houses? So far I've heard to use padmapper, lovelyliving, craigslist, and trulia. I don't see anything for August move-in though. Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

If clients are spread apart in the area, I'm not sure how well the car-free thing will work.

How often will you be working out of your home office?

Thanks for your reply.

Well they sent out a survey and asked if I was bringing a car and I indicated that I wasn't. I have talked to other practitioners at the firm, and they said that a lot of people that work there don't have cars. I assume they're going to place me at clients that are accessible by public transportation.

I think I'll be working at the home office in Rossyln on Fridays.

There are tons of bedrooms in Arlington on Craigslist within walking distance to metro for less than 1k. You might have to be a little more loose with your definition of "walking distance" cuz you're not getting a 1k bedroom right above the station.

Gomason, s/he's not looking for a single room. S/he has several roommates and is looking for a place to accommodate all of them at $1k each. That should be doable.

I think you'll be fine on all accounts.
Room -- budget is fine.
Timing -- you might be a bit too early for the August move outs/announcements
Sources -- all good. Does Deloitte have any online/internal sources? I worked at KPMG Consulting and would often see notes on boards, etc, of people looking to rent their house or rent a room or looking for a room.
Car -- I think you'll be fine, too. Until they don't want you.... If you were at Booz -- and they wanted you to leave -- then you'd start getting assignments that REQUIRED a car (like a project in Quantico). People would usually quit on their own (nice and tidy for Uncle Booz, too).
