Hi All,

I have a friend who is moving into the Asher Apartments which is a block away from the Braddock Metro. She is a nurse and will be walking home by herself sometimes at night. Would you say this is a safe neighborhood. We have heard mixed reviews about the West Old Town area.

its generally safe but there is a low rise public housing complex there. The opening of new housing, including the Asher, will probably make it more safe. But especially late at night someone walking there should probably be very aware of their surroundings.

I concur with brooklynbornbad. With lots of new condos, townhomes and apartments opening - and subsequently displacing much of the public housing - crime issues will be minimal. As already suggested, street wisdom may be useful late night coming home from Braddock although taxis are often available for a quick three-minute ride.

If that's a three minute cab ride, the driver is making it two and a half minutes too long. The Asher is not even a full two blocks from Metro. Wythe Street which has the projects across the street is generally safe with a fair amount of car and foot traffic. Late at night in the summer is when I'd be more careful. (We lived right nearby there 20 years ago and it is so much better now). You could always go around the Pendleton Street way, which is an extra block or two but a lot quieter and avoids the projects.

The bottom line is that area is relatively safe and getting safer.
