I'm currently looking for a slightly cheaper alternative to the apartment I'm currently renting in Rockville, MD. Right now, my rent is about $2400 a month for a 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 1000 sq feet apartment next to the metro. I'm looking to move to another area (preferably northern Virginia) where I can rent a 2 bedroom apartment within walking distance of a metro stop for slightly cheaper. I'm trying to find something around $1800-2000/month, in a safe area, and like I said, within walking distance to metro. I found a few options in Alexandria, but I've never been to the Arlington area. Can anyone recommend an apartment? Thanks!

Your odds might be better in Falls Church. Looking at an apartment search site, there seem to be several options for 2BRs within your range. Falls Church is as safe as any suburban area.

The residences close to the metro in Arlington and Alexandria are going to be at least as expensive for *comparable properties* as your Rockville place, because they are much closer to the jobs in DC, and some are closer to the jobs in the tech. corridor. So unless you are moving to get closer to your work location or have other personal reasons for wanting to move, or unless you are willing to settle for a smaller, older place with fewer amenities, I don't think you are going to be satisfied, because I don't think it will save you money.

see if you can find something in reston although i'm sure rents will go up due to metro's arrival.

(Dunn Loring Metro stop)

Halstead at the Metro, Wilton House, Westbriar (all condos).

Several new apartments there too. Prosperity Flats, Halstead something apartments.

Dunn Loring Metro apartments close to metro, but more expensive. There is also really cheap old apartment complex there that gets really bad ratings on apartment ratings.

Vantage at Merrifield further away from metro.

2 bedroom condo rentals seem to be $2100 or less.

A young relative recently moved to Sheffield Court apartments , where the rent on a 2 BR apart is about $2100. It's walking distance to Courthouse Metro -- at least, he and one of his roommates walks there. Might be too far for some people. It's an old, tired complex but the rooms are good-sized and so far he has no complaints. It gets terrible reviews on Yelp, but there are only a few reviews in total. You do get what you pay for, and you are paying for the location.

That may be true; however, the Green Line does not go into Virginia as the OP prefers.
