How long would the commute take if I took the Woodbridge VRE to Alexandria, then transferred at Alexandria to the Metro Blue line and took that to GWU?

Woodbridge to Alexandria via VRE = 27 minutes

Alexandria to GWU via Metro = Aproximately 20 minutes

47 minutes for rail time.

Thanks. Would the commute be very difficult during rush hour? I have not used D.C. public transit during rush hour, so I don't know what to expect.

Your trains are just going to be crowded. The upside to commuting via rail during rush hour is that the Metro trains are frequent. If you traveled non-rush, the wait times are longer. For instance, during non-rush, after you get off the VRE, you might have to wait 10-15 minutes for your blue line train to come (maybe longer). During rush, that train is going to be arriving probably every 5 minutes.
