My husband works at the patent office in Alexandria. We are looking to move and have been eyeing the fair oaks area. Anyone know what we would expect in commute times? Any way to avoid 66?

That's a very rough commute. If he can use an express bus to Vienna metro, then switch to the blue line in Rosslyn and go down to the King Street station, that will be the easiest on his nerves, but will be around an hour. If he's going to drive daily, he's looking at a minimum of an hour and may often be closer to 90 minutes, 66 to 495 S and around to Telegraph Road exit.

Maybe FFX parkway around to Baulah, over to Franconia, then up Van Dorn to Eisenhower, not pleasant but better than 66 in the am. I know someone that does it the Hoffman Building, which is just up from PTO.

Take 50 into downtown Fairfax and it becomes 236 and that goes straight into Alexandria. I'm on that road going the opposite way sometimes at rush hour and it doesn't look too bad inside the beltway.

I'd say the same, either 50 - 236 or Shirley Gate to Braddock to the beltway to Eisenhower. It shouldn't be that 'bad' of a commute at all.
