Hi folks
I am about to accept a job offer with location in Tysons Corner, McLean. Our kids will attend middle school. Some of our constraints and some suggestions given to us are:

- Living with a decent (?!) commute. 30 mins is what i am looking/hoping for.
- Towns/schools with decent diversity
- Need to be within decent driving distance to Childrens National Hospital (even 1 hr is ok). Michigan Ave or Mass Ave.
- Good programs at middle and high school (I am checking greatschools, US News rankings etc)

We would like to purchase a single family home by summer, budget upto $550k-$600k.

This rules out McLean and 1, 2 nearby towns.. too expensive. I was recommended Chantilly. What are your thoughts about Chantilly? or other towns?

I will try catching up on some posts but any nuggets of wisdom?

Thanks in advance!!
-pathakss

Chantilly might be too far -- not a bad place, just a bit far.

I'd be looking at Fairfax City and the areas N/E of there, or the parts of Falls Church south of Falls Church City proper that zone to Marshall HS.

Burke will get you to Tysons in 30 minutes, especially with the express lanes. Good middle/high schools (they are combined as "secondary schools". Your budget will get you a nice (if 30 years old) home.

Check out Reston - but in your price range good houses sell fast.

I'd say burke. Look near Burke Road, that way you have the option of using the express buses that leave from the VRE station. Chantilly is not good for commute, especially to Tysons.

Follow up: I also saw a lot of new development in HayMarket and looks affordable. It is 40 mins away from Tysons Corner. How are the schools? Traffic?

Haymarket is nice but far out. Not sure of the commute times and it won't be an easy ride to the hospital. I'd go with Burke as others have suggested.

I've always liked the Canterbury Woods area of Annandale, which is a few backroads from Tysons. At least some of the neighborhood was zoned to Frost Middle/Woodson High a few years ago, which is a good school pyramid.

I'd think Fairfax City/Mantua is better for a commute to Tysons and Children's than Burke. 29 to Gallows to wherever beats 236 to the Beltway to wherever IMHO.

Are you OK with Annandale HS?
