My husband and I met in law school in Denver, he is originally from NJ and I am from WI but I have lived in Colorado for 10 years. My husband recently graduated and is preparing to take the February 2008 Bar exam. I have one more year (I'm in the evening program) and will take the February 2009 Bar exam. We hear that the legal market in Denver is "tight" and all of my husband's family is on the east coast, including his precious grandparents in central VA.

The kicker is that I'm a horse person. I have 2 arabians and spend my free time traveling to endurance horse rides (AERC.org). I wonder if there is anywhere we will be able to find a decent horse property in the area. My husband thinks the job market for us will be much better on the east coast and I just want to know if anyone who knows anything about horses can tell me what cities or areas and price ranges and commute times from major cities where we could find a decent horse property (2-3 acres with barn) and decent work as young attorneys! Also, if anyone has lived in Colorado and now lives in VA, I would be interested in hearing any thoughts you have on the change in lifestyle, cost of living, raising a family, etc.

I've lived in both, stay in Colorado. I miss it A LOT (i was there in the USAF about ten years ago). Otherwise, Culpeper is HUGE horse country (Christopher Reeves got injured here).

I was born in Colorado and live in Reston, VA. The areas are completely different and hard to compare environment - wise. Nothing beats the beauty of Colorado, so Virginia will pale in comparison to Colorado in natural beauty. What Virginia does have to offer are the jobs and the economy. So, if you need that for your life, and you need to go where the money and jobs are, this is a great choice. If you can have a nice lifestyle in Colorado, then my advice is to stay there. I can honestly say from a person that is from Colorado Springs and lives in Reston - Colorado is much better - people are much better - the quality of life is much better if you can make the money there. That was not the luxury for me, so I had to leave and have lived in Reston for over 20 years, am raising 3 children, and make great money but my quality of life is not half as good as it was in Colorado...except the winters are a little better - the skiing is terrible.

Particularly 3 years later. Thanks for digging this up to try to compare "won't even pay to keep their streetlights on" Colorado Springs with Reston.

There may be some good reasons to stay in Colorado, but the one thing that DC metro has going for it -- as other posters have noted -- is jobs. Especially for young lawyers. Plus, it is pretty good experience for a new lawyer to get some job experience working in the city where our federal laws are made, even if you later decide you want to move back to Colorado. As for horse country, there is plenty of it in Virginia (and Maryland). But the closer you are to a major city, the more you will pay for it. Everything's a tradeoff...

Good luck.

Goozer, I'm sure these folks are long gone to whereever they were going. This post is 3 years old. Give it a rest.

Good point. Didn't see that the OP post was 3 years old. I'm sure my advice is falling on deaf ears!!!
