"Awhile back" there was no need to game the system, as the cameras were actually fake. There was a huge article in the WaPo sometime in the early 2000s exposing this. They certainly have cameras now, as I've received the fine when accidentally going through in a rental car. (I'm completely used to having the EZ Pass in my car, so I always use the EZ Pass lanes, even when I forget their is no transponder in the car.)

I've accidentally tailgated through the EZ Pass lane when the entity ahead has suddenly stopped or slowed to crawl when going through. There are legions who do not realize that the whole point of EZ Pass is to keep moving.

Just be careful. The speed limit through the EZ pass lanes on the dulles toll road are 35 MPH. I slow down to about 35-40, and it seems most don't, and some people get annoyed when I do. A friend got a reckless ticket going 60+ though there, so yes, keep moving, but it is not 55 mph.

That is true, and the infrastructure cost to change it now would be extrordinary, but I love going through EZ Pass lanes that were designed to maintain speed. They have them on the 495 HOT lanes, in Delaware on 95, and on the George Bush Turnpike in Dallas (I'm sure many other places, too.)

Great design.
