My husband's job is transferring him to Chantilly, VA and, with the both of us never having lived outside of Texas, we're a bit lost at the moment.

Hmm, not sure about apartment rentals, but there are plenty of good areas near Chantilly that you could consider. You might want to look at apartments AND rental condos and THs.

I'd focus on Chantilly, Centreville, Reston, Dulles and Herndon. I think Fairfax and Ashburn are just too far. Whatever you save in rent will be eaten up by transportation costs (and time).

Are you an "Austin Texan" or the good kind of Texan?
I lived in Chantilly for years and wouldn't describe any part of it as "unsafe". But some parts are definitely nicer/newer than others. You're definitely not going to find a decent 2Bed/2Bath for $1085 but you should be able to find something in the $1300-1500 range.
Usually with apartment complexes in that part of Nova newer is better...usually. Stay away from the older apartments.

I specified Fair Oaks/Fair Lakes part of Fairfax, as that borders Chantilly. Fairfax is a HUGE area.

We just moved here from San Antonio less than two weeks ago. My husband is going to be working in Chantilly and we are renting a home in Ashburn. The area is beautiful and we feel very safe! The community is very family oriented. The commute to Chantilly hasn't been bad.

The good news is since you don't have to work in DC, you have much better and affordable options. Safety in that part of VA is really a non-issue and the suggestions above are solid. Welcome to the area.

I recently moved from VA to TX. I'd say Fair Lakes if you can find a nice unit, straight drive down rt 50 to Chantilly. Check out Windsor of Fair Lakes apts, great location.

You might want to wait until after school starts to get a better feel of what traffic is really like. People that move here during the summer can be fooled since traffic is so much better.
Maybe check out South Riding, which borders Chantilly. Extremely family oriented.
