I will most likely accept a job in Alexandria. It is very close to the Braddock Road Metro Station. I am a single parent. My 14 year old will start 9th grade this year.

I have no family/friends in the area so I don't want to live all that far from where I work, in case of emergency.

I will be making at a minimum 75,000. I have one bill I pay per month that is $340.

Seeking at 3/2 townhouse to rent.

My teen is a classic underachiever. Test scores in the 95+ percentile but B/C in the classroom. I'm seeking a decent, SAFE school. TC Williams - Howard Campus reviews scare me. Is it that bad?

Please help.

What do you realistically feel that you can spend on rent per month (not including utilities)?

I'm really not sure how much my actual take home pay would be. Depending on taxes, etc. I'm thinking $2500. I'm hoping when I actually sit down with HR I will be able to calculate my net pay. It may be more or less. I'm totally guessing here. If what I want is not realistic I'm not opposed to going the apartment route although I prefer not to.

Would Fairfax County in Woodson HS or Lake Braddock SS boundaries be too far from work for you?

I think there are some nice townhouses in that price range off Telegraph Road in the Alexandria part of Fairfax County. Most would be zoned for Hayfield Secondary or Edison High. I think the main advantage they'd have over TC Williams is that they are smaller and a student with your son's profile might get more attention.

I dont think TC Williams Minnie Howard Campus is all that bad. I work for a k-8 private school. Our high school placement counselor sent his daughter to TC Williams once she graduated from 8th grade. He could have sent her to any of the areas private high schools but they chose TCW. She is now beginning her sophomore year, and she has done very well.

West Potomac HS is another good HS that is in FFX County just south of Alexandria.

I have no clue. How far is that? I look at boundaries on the map but I have no clue how much time it takes to get from one place to another. Mapping it doesn't take traffic into consideration.

Thanks. I was just about to ask about West Potomac. I saw a few townhouses in the Groveton area. They are zoned for West Potomac. Approximately how long would that commute be?

Groveton area to Braddock Rd Metro area should be about 15-20 mins driving. Just a straight shot up Route 1.

There are nice apartments/neighborhoods and a popular retail "town center" in Kingstowne, but I don't know what the high school is. The neighborhood is in the Alexandria portion of Fairfax County. The commute to work should be fairly easy (either by Metro or driving), and you would be comfortably close to work distance-wise.

The majority of Kingstowne is zoned for Hayfield, but some areas go to Edison (far East section) but can switch between the two depending on IB programs etc.

The average TH in Kingstowne runs about $2500-2700 depending on garages. (none, 1, or 2 car) There are mulitple apt complexes and they are pretty nice, not sure of price.
