I was quoted $4,200 for a 15 seer 2.5 ton and $3,500 for a 13 seer 2.5 ton for my townhouse. the estimate includes both the outside and inside unit (do I need to replace the inside unit? original unit 1983.) it comes with a 10 year warranty for parts and one year warranty for labor. The guy came highly recommended.

Thank you

That sounds reasonable to me. I replaced my A/C at the beginning of the summer with a 13 SEER, both indoor & outdoor units, new pad and replaced all the lines.

I would get a second opinion. I don't know if the cost of A/C replacement is inflated in Northern Virginia like housing prices, but that seems a bit high to me. You may want to pose your question in the House forum of this website because someone there may be able to discuss what needs to really be replaced. I will say that this is a very bad time of year to get that replaced. I hope the people in that forum can help you. I have learned a lot lurking in that area!

The "indoor unit" is the A-coil which is housed in a box called the air handler.. It is a simple device with no moving parts. 30 years is pretty old, but about the the only thing that goes wrong with them is they get dirty.

However, the higher SEER units require a matching A-coil to achieve the designed efficiency. I would replace it.

That's a decent price. You can price the parts yourself then see if the labor charges are fair

Minoucha,
Are you looking to replace the AC only, without furnace? We are looking into replacing our whole, very old system - both AC and furnace. We had a couple estimates and quoted prices were in 10k range! :-(
