Yes, I know the monument is in DC but most people on this forum go into DC all the time, and I'm curious if you guys are becoming fond of the new scaffolding. I confess, I rather like it. The grid look has grown on me. LOL, never thought I'd like the look of scaffolding, but there ya go. Maybe it's the new temporary lights--they actually make the monument look rather jazzy. Maybe they should just leave it in place.

Yes! Especially when it's lit up at night. A nice change bit of scenery change.

Yeah, it's a nice change of pace.

They should let a different group paint it with a design of their choice every year, in exchange for a hefty donation to the Treasury.

Or maybe not, lest we end up with The Capital One Washington Monument.

Yes! It kinda Vegas bright but I love how the scaffolding puts the existing structure in a new context without being permanent.

Its really bright compared to the Lincoln and Vietnam memorials

No we'd end up with a Christo inspired hot pink rod consisting of billowing sheets. Yuck

I think I liked the scaffolding better the last time. What was it...'95 or '96?

They wrapped it in some kind of blue mesh which was backlit. The Blue Monument!

I remember it, but can't remember exactly why and when. I feel like it may have been late 90s, though, because I moved here in '98.

Yup, 98 - here is an article that notes the date. How the Washington Monument has been repaired over the years - The Washington Post

People are SO gullible.

"They" call it "scaffolding" but we know what it really is - a large antenna to project the aura around the capital to keep the aliens out.

Works well, too!
