Why can't it? It's becoming a PR nightmare.

What if they were the Washington ******s? Or the Washington chinks? Polacks? Hebes? Paddies?

It won't, not for a long time. Snyder will go down swinging before he changes that name. It was his boy-hood fantasy to own that team

Look, I am not a Redskins fan, so I don't really care one way or another. But, what's the big deal with the name change? Was there this much outrage when the Bullets changed to the Wizards?

I think they are going to have to at some point. I understand the tradition and what not (Heck, I grew up a Skins fan and even defended it at one point), but now that there are major Indian organizations calling for a name change, not doing so makes Snyder look like a massive d*#@.

Change it to the Redmen. Even the great Tecumseh referred to Indians as red men. Can any modern activists trump the mighty Tecumseh?

And MLK referred to blacks as Negroes, as was the parlance of the time. Yet we would not tolerate a team with that name as a mascot.

The name is offensive to most Native Americans. If Snyder had any decency, he'd change the name. I doubt he will.

Is it demonstrable that Indians are offended by Redmen as opposed to Redskins?

I have inklings the term Negro is being rehabilitated. For one thing it was never meant as a pejorative as redskin was. I don't think MLK ever referred to black people as "shines" and I don't think Tecumseh referred to Indians as "redskins".

In any event what would you suggest? Just plain old "Indians"? Works for Cleveland. Use the name of a people who used to live there the way U of Florida uses the Seminoles? What would that be then? Susquehannas? Lenapis? Powhatans? I'm just a guessin'.
