I'm interested in purchasing a home in Loudoun County but I was wondering if anyone could tell me how the commute would be from Loudoun to Dupont Circle in DC. Is it manageable or would the commute be horrendous? If so, would purchasing a house in Fairfax of Arlington County make more sense?

Driving to DC from Loudoun is not recommended if you can help it. You may find it useful to get acquainted with these commuter bus schedules . By the end of next year, the Silver Line Metro will begin service out to Reston which may increase your commuting options. The eventual terminus at Dulles Airport (estimated to be around the end of the decade) will give you even more convenient choices.

What is your preferred budget? Depending on your financial and household circumstances, you may find it worthwhile to trade off a more convenient location for a smaller and/or less updated property at a similar price to what you may be finding in Loudoun.

I thought it was supposed to begin service in January 2014.

From what I have read the service will start at some point in February 2014. Originally it was meant to start at the end of 2013 but that was pushed back a few months. I have heard they will start early in February but nothing official has been announced yet.

I thought they were saying mid-late February, which really means March, right?

Where in Loudoun are you looking and is your schedule flexible? Eastern Loudoun (Sterling, Ashburn) is going to be a much better commute than western. And if you leave early (like by 6am) you will have a much better commute in to DC. If you leave at 6:30 or later you're probably looking at maybe an hour and fifteen minutes versus 50 if you leave before 6am.

Commute is going to depend on where exactly you purchase in Loudoun. We live in Sterling/Countryside and I commute ot Dupont circle and have been for several years now. Takes about 1.25 - 1.5 hours depending on traffic etc. Not great but could be worse. I strongly suggest looking at the silver line and also the Herndon Monroe Park and ride lot. It has nearly 2000 spots so plenty of parking and the bus runs to the metro every 6 minutes at rush hour and every 30 minutes as other times all the way until the metro closes. I liked the Loudoun buses but they didn't work for me as would get stuck working late and the last bus had already left.

Good luck.

I would not recommend it if your only option is the Greenway. Since many people people avoid it it clogs surface streets.

There will be two stations in Loudoun that are after Dulles Airport.
