I agree. Reminds me of this comedy radio bit I heard once once where the radio host was impersonating a PTA president that had started a program for teenagers called "glance up" to remind the teenage drivers of the need to glance up from their phones while they're driving. Sadly, I could see something like that actually happening some day.

Red face traffic little rough

Tough commute today with the afternoon rains and all roads seem to have taken a hit. Trying to upload a overall DC traffic map (without success) which is mostly red on every interstate in the area.

I read earlier that some posters mentioned improvements to I-95. Since the traffic is still bad what's the next step in trying to correct the problem, or is there nothing that can be done but grin and bear it?

don't know. Even when hov lanes are done, it won't take much more traffic off the regular lanes to max the hov and bring it also to a standstill.

95 North is awful today. 395 N before Seminary Rd is just as bad. Just came back from Potomac Mills. Ugh. Not looking forward to driving to Baltimore tonight,

My dream would be to turn 301 into a interstate like highway and build a new bridge where it crosses into VA so it will take the points South of Richmond and North of DC folks off 95.

I live by Potomac Mills. This morning as I was out running errands I passed over I-95 several times (all around 10AM). Southbound was solidly backup and northbound was VERY heavy. Where the heck is everyone going today?

I think there was an accident southbound and heard there was one on 395. I saw the slow traffic from Wegman's parking lot this morning. I don't know why they didn't build the HOT lanes to run both ways throughout the day similar to the HOT lanes on 495. Four more years or so before hubby retires and then we are out of here!

I have lived here for 2 months and travel I-95 on a daily basis. Coming from Georgia I can tell you the issue on I-95 is a lack of creative when designing almost all of the interchanges from exit 130 all the way to the Springfield Interchange. What I mean by this is if you look at a map almost all of the interchanges are cloverleaves. The problem with a cloverleaf interchange is the small room available to enter and exit the interchange which causes gridlock. To combat this almost all the interchanges need to be upgraded to allow for free flowing entering and exiting of the interstate. The other issue is a lack of auxiliary lanes between certain interchanges, for example if you add an auxiliary lane on both side of 95 from Garrisonville to Quantico, local military traffic would not have to mix with thru traffic to go a few miles up the road. Auxiliary lanes could also work in many other locations.

This morning while sitting in the daily 5:15am jam at Exit 143 (Aquia) I wondered why they don't install one of those stop lights that meters traffic entering the highway like they have on 395. I am almost positive that the backup there is due to the high volume of commuters merging into traffic with a very small merge area.
