I have rarely seen such huge piles of snow in Northern VA as I saw this weekend.

While the unplowed snow in yards and fields may be melted in a few weeks, I suspect it will be sometime in April before some of the huge 15 feet high crusty brown snow in parking lots will melt.

What is you prediction on when the last of the huge piles will melt?

Good question. We don't have any 15 footers in our neighborhood but there are some pretty big piles from the snowplows messing up sidewalks, maybe like 3-4 feet. I really hope the weather this week makes them disappear.

Forecast is for temps in the 50s for several days this week, not to mention rain. They'll be gone in less than ten days.

I live in a tree branch townhouse setup at the end of one of the branches. "Plowing" in my neighborhood means shoving all the snow to the end of the street, partially blocking the end carports. Lucky me, right?

On the plus side, that seven foot mound of snow was fun for me and my daughter to do mini-sliding and playing king (or queen) of the snow mountain. I'm pretty sure it will make it into March.

I think most of the snow will be gone by the end of this weekend, assuming the current forecast holds up. But, some of those really large piles in parking lots will likely be around well into March if not early April - just depends how cold March is and/or whether we get any more significant snowfall.

I remember when I lived in the Midwest we had a very heavy snow fall in late March and there were piles as high as 15 feet in parking lots. It stayed cold for another two weeks with little melting and the piles got hard and crusty. Finally in April we had a week of 80 degree weather but the huge piles hardly melted because they had got so hard and crusty. If it were new snow the 80 degree weather would have melted the 10 inch snow in a couple days but the hard crusty snow in huge piles that has filled with dirt and salt took a month to melt.

I expect to see some snow in piles to mid April.

Not the piles. After the snowstorms of Feb 2010 we had one of the warmer Marches on record, and there were still piles well into April. I always noticed the one on the north side of the WFC metro. Somebody even made a blog about one pile that lasted until late April in Charlottesville: Mount Chipotle National Research Observatory

Still betting that almost everything will have melted before March 1 (if not the whole shebang). Hey, we could have some fun with this--those of you who have such huge snow piles could take photos once a week of the biggest snow pile near you slowly melting away. We could have a race to see which one lasts the longest.

Went by Fair Lakes last night and the Wal-Mart parking lot has an impressive Himalayan Mountain chain model on display...by far the tallest/biggest I've seen this winter (> 15 ft). I am not going over there once a week to take pictures though lol

I can remember a few winters in the last 20 years or so where the snow piled up this high
