So I am at NVCC right now, I have been here for a year and will be going to GMU next year.

I will be majoring in Finance. I am worried that I wont be able to find a job. Now, my couselor has told me that I can change my major with no loss of credits or time to graduate, namely to Business, Economics, and with a few extra classes, Information systems.

Does a Finance degree carry any weight

After you get your degree, shoot for the CPA or CMA exams while working, or possibly your MBA.

I have a finance degree, it has served me extremely well. Two rules I've lived by for the past 15 years, one is a guide and one is an economic reality of our society: Nothing happens without money, and be the money. What does that mean? You can work for anyone you want with a finance degree because they (being the employer) can't do what they do without accountants and finance support. Second, it's a lot easier to "be the money" than to be the one "finding the money". An example: A lender vs a mortgage broker. One has the comfort in saying no, while one has the discomfort of saying no. Additionally, one is usually retained when things go bad in the economy to shift more towards "asset management", while the other is likely to be eliminated.

My point - I'd stick with your finance degree. I personally think it's the #1 degree to get in college. Finance is more than just stocks/bonds/spreads. It, along with a good accountant, is the lifeblood of a capitalistic society, which is what we are!

You can land good jobs with either of those with government or gov. contracted jobs. It's best to get an MBA, but some of these companies have deep pockets and if you land a descent BA job, they may pay all or a good portion towards your MBA. I have seen it.

I.T. is growing and soon will be inflated. Stick with finance. Every place needs a finance manager, accountant, etc...
