love his description of a dive bar - very accurate for VA.

(In any other state, though, my description of a dive bar would include there being no food.)

Technically speaking there are no bars in Virginia. There are restaurants that serve alcohol...

There are no stand-alone bars in Virginia. In Virginia, to receive an on-premises ABC license from the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, the establishment must serve food and be able to show a set percentage of sales attributable to food.

There's one near me, in Westover--Forest Inn. The Yelp reviews are intriguing.

I think Fat Tuesday's in the rear of University Mall definitely qualifies as a dive. "Cajun" food, live music and GMU hotties all under one roof!

The closest thing to a dive bar out here is probably the Ashburn Pub (in Ashburn Village).

We went to Mahalo Cove, a bar/restaurant in Cascades (near Sterling) once; we had a Groupon or something. It was pretty divey. Not dangerous or disgusting, but you got the impression that the same aging party animals went there every night. (I recall that the food was disappointing.)

Actually you WILL see school buses back there! But unfortunately, we're not stopping for a drink at FT's....we're going to the Teddy Bear Daycare which is also back there...or we're on a field trip to the dollar movie theatre.
