Moving to VA (Arlington, Hampton, Alexandria: apartments, rentals, townhouses)

Hi,

I'm moving to VA and will be working in Arlington area. I'm looking for good schools and apartments near to the metro station. Please suggest apartments which has a reasonable rents.

As a former Arlingtonian, and possibly one again someday, I'll give you my two cents. Arlington is a wonderful city, and it's in the best place in NOVA in my opinion. You border DC, Alexandria, Fairfax County, and a commute to any of those is never too bad. You're inside the beltway on normal days, but access to it isn't far. I-66 does get crowded in the mornings, just like any other interstate, but it's a wonderful place.

I lived in Clarendon. It's right near the Courthouse area, which is very expensive, but I had a one bedroom for 950, in a good area where nobody bothered me, and I was right next to Route 50 (a backbone road for travel between Arlington and Fairfax County.) I was a 5 minute walk from the Courthouse Metro. My mother-in-laws apartment was literally 5 mins from DC and right near Marymount University and George Mason University, and she paid 1050 per month for a 2 bedroom. That's about as reasonable as it gets. That apartment was a 10 minute walk to the Ballston Metro, and of course had a ton of metro bus stops near it. You'll see rents soar up above 2000 but there are plenty of reasonable areas to live in.

Some nice places include Clarendon, Bailey's Crossroads (closer to Fairfax), several places along the North Glebe Rd area, it really all just depends on where you look and what you're looking for. I never had any trouble with anybody, but you do have your normal abnormalities with it just like anywhere else.

I had a car stolen from Tyson's Corner Center in McLean.. just goes to show you that anything can happen anywhere. Good luck with your move and be confident that it's a good one.

I pretty much agree with what thestarlieswest says except that Bailey's Crossroads is a nice place. I used to work a store along Columbia Pike right next to the Arlington line and i would never want to live anywhere near there. That area of Arlington looks downright gritty and i'm from Hampton, VA trust me i know gritty when i see it. Not to say it is like Anacostia in Southeast DC but i would avoid that area at all costs unless it is your absolute last resort. If you want to live along Columbia Pike in Arlington i'd stay right close to Ft. Myer and points north. I'd really suggest North Arlington if it is within your price range.

IF you want to travel a little far from Arlington, you could find discent apartments, or townhouses for rent in the Dunn Loring and East/West Falls Church metro stations. One thing to keep in mind is that any living near a metro will cost you a little more and the further you go outside the beltway or DC the less expensive rentals will be.
