I am looking for a healthy environment, good people and a good workout that is not too far from western Fairfax/Chantilly Virginia.
have not swam in about 15 years due to the chlorine at the Reston Community center would dry my skin out so bad. I tried showering right after and using lotion. It also had a very strong chemical smell when I walked into the pool area.
I would appreciate your wisdom.
Thank you!

Buy a house in Lake Barcroft, and you can use their private freshwater lake.

Try Cub Run in Chantilly/Centerville. My daughter swims all over the area and I haven't heard her complain about Cub Run. Oak Marr in Fairfax is also a good choice.

The thing that may be causing your skin irritation is the Ph levels. The optimal Ph level is 7.2 - 7.8. You can always ask at the front desk what the last Ph reading was. A high Ph is poor chlorine disinfecting and low Ph mean that there's too much chlorine present.

George Mason University pool is supposed to be bromine based, not chlorine. They do have community memberships but don't know much else about it. Call and ask your questions.

Gawd, that sounds worse. Chlorine is in most places' drinking water, but bromine? Is that less toxic?

Bromine and chlorine are both disinfection by products in drinking water. See this EPA webpage for basic information.
